You’re either pregnant or trying to get pregnant. What should you know about pregnancy? While often welcome, pregnancy is something that will change your life and you need to be prepared by understanding what you should expect.

Some of the changes you will notice during pregnancy will involve changes to your body. As you probably know, you can expect your uterus to expand but as that happens you will also experience other changes. These changes may include backaches, pain in the pelvic area and even joint pain as the joints begin to loosen. You will also notice changes in your breasts. For most women, the breasts become larger and fuller during pregnancy. This can sometimes result in tenderness. During the last trimester, the breasts may begin to leak a thick, yellowish substance known as colostrum. This is the first milk that is produced in anticipation of breastfeeding. Inserting nursing pads in your bra can help absorb any wetness.

You may also experience dizziness during pregnancy. Although most women do not actually faint, it is a possibility. Lightheadedness in pregnancy is due to the growth of blood vessels, especially early in pregnancy. Stand up slowly and make sure you do not sit or stand in one position for too long to help with this problem. If you do faint, contact your doctor.

Unfortunately some women also experience problems with hemorrhoids during pregnancy. If you have not experienced this problem before, hemorrhoids are veins in the rectum that become swollen and begin to bulge. It can cause bleeding, pain and itching.

Many women also experience shortness of breath during pregnancy, especially as the baby begins to grow. Try taking deep, long breaths to help with this problem and maintaining good posture to ensure your lungs have plenty of room for expansion.

Another common change during pregnancy is swelling. This can occur in the ankles, hands and face and is most common during late pregnancy. If you notice sudden, significant amounts of swelling, you should contact your doctor immediately as this could be a sign of toxemia or preeclampsia; both of which are very serious conditions.

Digestive problems are also common during pregnancy, including constipation and heartburn. Remember that you should not take any medications unless advised by your doctor. Instead, try to eat plenty of foods rich in fiber, drink plenty of water, avoid foods that are greasy or fried and eat slowly.

You will also likely notice a variety of skin changes during pregnancy. While stretch marks are dreaded as a part of pregnancy, only about half of pregnant women actually get them. Other possible skin changes include brown splotches, tingling and itching.

During pregnancy you may also experience changes in your sleep patterns. Even though you may be exhausted, you may also find it difficult to sleep. This is usually most common in the first and third trimesters.

Of course, you will also experience weight gain during pregnancy. The exact amount of weight you can expect to gain will vary, but a healthy weight gain will be between 25 and 35 pounds for a singleton birth.

Generally, it is perfectly safe to continue having sex during pregnancy, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. You should contact your doctor if you have pain in the abdomen or begin to bleed.

Finally, you should know that you will likely experience a range of emotions during pregnancy. Hormones tend to increase rapidly during pregnancy which can cause you to experience a host of emotions. You may feel ecstatic one moment and feel like crying the next. While disturbing, mood swings are perfectly natural and part of pregnancy.

You’ve taken the test, and it is positive. Chances are, you have more emotions running through your mind than you could possibly count. Whether this is your first pregnancy or your fifteenth, whether it was planned or not, the variety and depth of your feelings at this moment in your life may throw you for a loop. Fortunately, you are not expected to plan out every detail of your pregnancy the moment you get the news. There is a lot to consider, and it can seem overwhelming. Take it one step at a time, one topic at a time, rather than trying to do everything all at once.

CHOOSE A PRACTIIONER: ADOPTION CENTER OR ADOPTION ATTORNEY

One of the most important early decisions is to choose your practitioner. If you tested at home, in fact, your doctor may want to confirm the test results in his/her office within a few days. Whatever the future holds for you and your baby, prenatal care is vital. Your doctor, nurse, or midwife can also help you to answer the ever-growing list of questions you may have about what your body is doing, and they may have information and resources that could be useful to you. Such resources might include a list of stores in your area that sell maternity clothing, pamphlets about birthing options and childbirth classes, networks and groups made up of other area pregnant women, or referrals to counselors who can assist you through whatever your individual needs may be. The job of the obstetric caregiver goes well beyond just the medical.

A trusted practitioner is only one piece of the network surrounding you, however. Friends, family, your partner, and community organizations are invaluable resources to a pregnant woman. You will be surprised at the number of people who will have advice to give. Though do note that you will not have to – nor even be able to take every piece of advice offered to you; it’s a matter of sifting through the varied opinions to find what is right for you.

You may turn also to books and reputable websites for advice. Many pregnancy-based sites have forums where you may make friends, seek advice, and discuss the changes occurring in your life and in your body. Others are more of an Internet-based book of facts and information, if you prefer to do your own research rather than reaching out to other women.

Each stage of pregnancy brings its own questions and concerns. In the beginning you will most likely be mainly focused on nutrition and the do’s and don’ts of pregnancy, whereas by the end you will be planning the details of your birth and possibly shopping for baby gear. Whatever your circumstance, it is likely you will eventually have questions. Though some of the changes you will undergo are obvious and expected, Nature likely has some surprises for you. From the day of your positive test until the day you deliver, your life will be filled with ups and downs. The aim of this site is to provide you with information pertaining to as many eventualities as we can.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What rights does the father of the baby have?

Legal rights of birthfathers are different and specific in each state. You have the option of having the father of your baby involved in the adoption plan if he is interested in participating.

At MAY WE ADOPT, we wish to guide you to you understand the laws in your state and the specifics on birthfather’s laws

How much contact can I have with the family after birth? Or can I choose not to stay in touch?

It is very important to make an adoption plan that is comfortable for both you and the adoptive parents. Many Birth Parents choose to receive letters and photos from the adoptive parents, some just periodically. Others prefer phone conversations and actually visits. It is important to choose parents whose ideas about ongoing contact are similar to your own. Sometimes adopting couples are initially fearful about continued contact, but your Adoption Advisor can help them with this and help you make a plan that works for everyone.

What about my medical bills and other expenses while I’m pregnant?

If you need financial assistance, many adoption sites have adoptive families who can help with your living expenses or other costs that are related to the pregnancy (as allowed by state law). Adoption agencies can help you apply for medical insurance benefits to receive during your pregnancy. The courts will review your expenses before the adoption is finalized. They will help you to comply with the adoption laws.

Each situation is different and the laws vary by state in regards to financial assistance. In many cases you may qualify for the adoptive family to pay for pregnancy-related expenses such as:

    Medical Bills
Housing
Transportation
Maternity Clothes
Food
